FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
It’s okay to have questions.
Starting counselling can feel unfamiliar. Here are honest, straightforward answers to help you feel more comfortable before making that first call.

STARTING COUNSELLING
Before your first appointment
Do I need a GP referral?
No. You can contact Numurkah Counselling directly. A GP referral is not required to make an appointment.
How do I book an appointment?
Call us on 03 7049 3275. We will ask a few simple questions, discuss availability and help match you with suitable support.
What happens during the first session?
Your first session is a relaxed conversation about what has been happening, what you would like help with and what would make counselling feel safe and useful. You do not need to arrive with everything worked out.
What should I talk about?
You can begin wherever feels easiest. Your counsellor can gently guide the conversation, and you never have to discuss something before you feel ready.
What if I become emotional?
That is completely okay. Counselling is a private and supportive space where emotions are welcome. Your counsellor will work at your pace and help you feel grounded.
Can I bring a support person?
In some circumstances, yes. Please discuss this with us before the appointment so we can make sure it supports your comfort, privacy and therapeutic goals.

THE RIGHT FIT
Counselling should feel safe and comfortable.
A good connection with your counsellor matters. You are allowed to ask questions, speak honestly and tell us if something does not feel right.
What if I do not like or connect with my counsellor?
Please tell us. Finding the right fit is important, and it is not rude or unusual to feel that another counsellor may suit you better. We can talk through your concerns and, where possible, help arrange a change.
Can I change counsellors?
Yes. If the connection does not feel right, contact us and we will discuss the available options without judgement.
Is counselling confidential?
Yes. Your privacy is taken seriously. There are limited legal and safety exceptions, including serious risk of harm, child-safety concerns or where disclosure is required by law. Your counsellor will explain these limits clearly.
How many sessions will I need?
There is no fixed number. Some people attend for a small number of focused sessions, while others benefit from longer-term support. You and your counsellor can regularly review what is helping and what you need.

Can I claim counselling on my private health insurance?
You may be able to claim part of your counselling fee, depending on your health fund, level of cover and the eligibility of your practitioner. We can provide a receipt for your appointment. Please check directly with your insurer before attending to confirm your rebate and any requirements.
How long is a counselling session?
Standard individual and private Chill Skills appointments are generally 60 minutes. Couples or specialised appointments may vary, and we will confirm the duration when you book.
What payment methods do you accept?
Please ask our team when booking and we will explain the payment options available for your appointment.
What is your cancellation policy?
We understand that plans sometimes change. Please provide as much notice as possible if you need to cancel or move an appointment. Cancellation fees may apply in accordance with our cancellation policy.
Do you provide home visits?
Home visits may be available in suitable circumstances and locations. Please call us to discuss your needs, availability and the applicable home-visit fee.
Are appointments available in person?
Yes. Appointments are available at our Numurkah clinic. Home visits may be offered by prior arrangement when appropriate.
